Marlies van Eck
At Hooghiemstra & Partners, Marlies advises organisations and conducts research. Commissioned by the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights, she studied the use of algorithms at municipalities. She also worked on the evaluation of the UAVG, the Dutch Implemention of the GDPR Act, for the WODC. She co-wrote studies on the intertwining of the AI Act and other EU regulations in health. She can be frequently found on stage, speaking on the effects of data, technology and bureaucracy.
Marlies was a member of a Supervisory Committee for the municipality of Amsterdam regarding the local holistic approach to prevent radicalization. She also led the research into multidisciplinary assessment of automated implementation of legislation, The LegitiMate. She was the initiator of the post doc program on Law, Ethics and AI of Leiden University.

Marlies finished her PhD research on automated chain decision making and legal protection at Tilburg University in 2018. She has a long track record as legal advisor in public institutions.
Marlies studied IT and Law and administrative law at Radboud university and is guest researcher at the same university in the Tax Law Department. Radboud University awarded her with the Hermesdorf talentprize for her media performances. She is also one of the board members of the Stichting Bescherming Privacybelangen, that has filed a law suit against a Big Tech company.
